Entrance Exam for Ninth Graders

The exam consists of three parts: reading comprehension text, writing task and vocabulary.  

 

Part1:Reading Comprehension 50%

 

Students should know how to grasp the main idea in the article and of each paragraph, to locate relevant information, to follow sequence of events, to understand the writer’s opinion, to utilize eye catchers, e.g. pictures, numbers, dates and capital letters, and to use connectors as a key to text comprehension.

 

Part 2: Writing (30%)

Students are required to write 50-60 words paragraph that describes an experience / event / person..., and writing an informal letter. Students should be aware of:

  1. Sentence structure (simple and complex).

  2. Using connectors

  3. Irregular verbs

The 30 points on the writing task are divided as follows:

10 points for content.

11 points for grammar.

6 points for vocabulary.

3 points for mechanics (spelling, capital letter and punctuation).

Part3: Vocabulary(20%)

Exercises focusing on vocabulary, e.g. translation, matching,…

A list of words consisting about 1250 frequent basic words is attached.

 

Very important!

The knowledge of the words in the list is necessary not only for doing part3 but also for doing part1 and part2 as well.

 

 

Grammar:

  • Basic tenses (present simple, present progressive, present perfect simple, past simple, past progressive, future simple)

  • Adjectives (as…as, comparative degree, superlative degree)

  • Adverbs

  • Passive voice (present simple, past simple, future)

  • Relative clauses

  • Prepositions (Time & Place)

  • Gerunds |& Infinitives.

Connectors (cause and effect: because, since, for,  so, therefore) (Contrast: but, however, although, despite, in spite of, though, even though)

(Addition: and, in addition, moreover)
